The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in partnership with the Faculty of Engineering, Nangarhar University, is conducting a training on the fundamentals of Earth observation and geospatial technologies on 1–6 February 2020 in Kabul, Afghanistan. The training is being organized as part of a series of capacity-building initiatives for professionals in Afghanistan under ICIMOD’s SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya (SERVIR-HKH) Initiative.
Aimed at lecturers from Nangarhar, Laghman, and Sayed Jamaluddin Afghani universities, the training offers hands-on experience in mapping, designing, exploration, and visual interpretation using geospatial data, Earth observation data, and geospatial technologies. The training will cover the fundamentals and concepts of geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) as well as practical applications of GIS/RS, including mapping and visualization, geospatial data management, data compilation and editing, image visualization, data extraction, and interpretation of satellite imagery.
The training aims to build the capacity of lecturers from Nangarhar, Laghman, and Sayed Jamaluddin Afghani universities on GIS/RS fundamentals, concepts, and its applications. This training adopts a training-of-trainers approach to enable participating lecturers to replicate such trainings in their universities.
A total of 12 nominated participants – six lecturers from Nangarhar University, three from Laghman University, and three from Sayed Jamaluddin Afghani University – will attend the training.
