Small Grants Programme

1. Center for Water Resources Studies, Institute of Engineering, Tribhuvan University (TU), Nepal

The Center for Water Resources Studies (CWRS) is a research center under the Institute of Engineering (IoE), functioning as the government’s think tank at Tribhuvan University (TU). Its mission is to conduct research on water resources development and management within the context of climate change. The center aims to contribute to Nepal’s water resources planning, development, and management, advising the government on contemporary water issues.

CWRS focuses on six primary areas: water resources, climate change impacts and adaptation/mitigation, water infrastructures, water governance, transboundary waters, and hydro-informatics.

In addition to research and publishing, CWRS is involved in capacity building, developing tools and information systems, and advocacy. The center’s seven specific objectives are:

  • Conduct and promote fundamental, applied, and policy research on Nepal’s water resources planning, development, and management.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and information on Nepal’s water resources availability, use, development potentials, and water allocation.
  • Develop products (e.g., maps, atlases) related to Nepal’s water resources, including rainfall variability, evaporation distribution, hydrological variability, and climatic variability.
  • Develop, regularly update, and maintain the Nepal Water Resources Information System to provide current knowledge on Nepal’s water resources through a single window.
  • Initiate dialogue on various contemporary water-related issues.
  • Provide advisory services to the government of Nepal.
  • Design and implement sensitization and capacity-building programs in cutting-edge science and tools for water research and contemporary water issues.

Operating as an autonomous research center of IoE/TU, CWRS has the authority to design and implement projects and programs that align with its goals and objectives. It can partner and collaborate with national and international, governmental, and non-governmental organizations in project design and implementation. The center is governed by a seven-member board, chaired by the Dean of IoE/TU, which serves as the highest decision-making authority on various aspects of policy and planning.
