A five-day training on land cover mapping using earth observation data will be conducted at Kabul University, Afghanistan, by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in partnership with the university’s Geosciences Faculty. The training is being organized as part of a series of capacity-building initiatives for professionals in Afghanistan under ICIMOD’s SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya (SERVIR-HKH) Initiative, a joint development initiative of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). SERVIR works in partnership with leading regional organizations worldwide to help developing countries use information provided by Earth observation data and geospatial technologies for managing water, weather and climate risks, agriculture and food security, and land use.
This training will focus on the use of Earth observation data and geospatial technologies for land cover mapping in Afghanistan. Training materials and hands-on exercises have specifically been tailored for application in Afghanistan. The training will cover basic concepts of land use and land cover (LULC) mapping, remote sensing, image classification, land cover classification system, and land cover mapping application. It will offer hands-on experiences to the participants in analyzing Earth observation data for land cover mapping. Topics on mapping accuracy, land cover change analysis, and satellite image indices will be also covered. The training will also include undergraduate students of the Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, and Geoscience faculties in Kabul University.
