The SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya (SERVIR-HKH) initiative at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) aims to use Earth observation information and geospatial technologies for environmental management and improve resilience to climate change in the HKH.
In collaboration with NASA Applied Science Team (AST) and national partners, SERVIR-HKH is developing a drought monitoring and early warning system to support national- and local-level planning and agro advisory services. It has developed a prototype web based application that can visualize different drought indices and their spatial distribution along with a crop calendar.
SERVIR-HKH involves partners at different stages of application development to ensure that requirements of partner agencies are addressed. The initiative believes such involvement adds value to the application development process. It will hold a one day “System Design Workshop for National Drought Monitoring System in Nepal” to present the design of the application and progress, and receive valuable feedback from partners. Partner inputs will guide further development of the application.
The workshop will discuss National Drought Monitoring System among country partners and ensure that the design of the system addresses their requirements. It aims to:
- provide updates on drought-related work and status of initiatives
- present the prototype of the drought monitoring system and receive feedback on its design and user interface
- identify gaps in data, method, and process for information generation and dissemination
- agree on mode of co-development along with the roles of individual partners in order to create an operational system from the prototype
