Stakeholder Consultation Workshop on Preparations for the 2019 Floods: Expectations and Way Forward

About

The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) has been providing technical support to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) to improve its flood model, especially in developing more accurate boundary discharge information for monsoon and flash flood forecasting. ICIMOD has also extended its support to the FFWC in developing a user-friendly mobile application – BWDB Flood App – which aims to make flood warning information more accessible to the public.

To make stakeholder engagement more effective through the flood forecast dissemination system, half-day stakeholder consultation workshops will be organized by the FFWC with support from ICIMOD in two of the most vulnerable flood hotspots in Bangladesh – Serajgonj and Bogra – on 25 and 26 of February 2019, respectively.

This workshop will focus on familiarizing stakeholders with the flood warning dissemination tools produced by the FFWC and on accessing flood information using the BWDB Flood App.

Objectives

The main objectives of this workshop are as follows:

  • To create awareness among stakeholders about the current flood forecasting system with improved outlook in the northwestern region of Bangladesh
  • To introduce the BWDB Flood App to the main stakeholders engaged in flood disaster management Feedback from stakeholders is expected to improve the quality of forecasts and orient the dissemination system towards meeting user needs.

The workshop is being organized under the SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya (SERVIR-HKH) Initiative at ICIMOD that supports its regional member countries in disaster risk reduction and enhances climate services by integrating Earth observation data and geospatial technologies into development decision making. SERVIR connects space to village by helping developing countries use satellite data to address critical challenges in food security, water resources, weather and climate, land use, and natural disasters. A partnership of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and leading technical organizations, SERVIR develops innovative solutions to improve livelihoods and foster self-reliance in Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
