Aiming to strengthen the competencies of its key partners and country office in Afghanistan in the use of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data and their applications, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) will conduct a seven- day introductory course on SAR in Delhi, India, from 15 to 21 April 2019.
The course is part of the institutional capacity-building activities for partner organizations in Afghanistan under ICIMOD’s SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya (SERVIR- HKH) Initiative. SERVIR-HKH is a joint development initiative of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). SERVIR works in partnership with leading regional organizations worldwide to help developing countries use information provided by Earth observation data and geospatial technologies for managing water, weather and climate risks, agriculture and food security, and land use.
The course aims to provide theoretical and practical knowledge in using SAR data and their application in effective crop monitoring in Afghanistan. Feedback from stakeholders is also expected to improve the quality of forecasts and gear the dissemination system towards meeting user needs.
Upon completion of the training course, the participants will have a better understanding about the concepts and general applications of SAR remote-sensing data and their potential/limitations for particular applications.
The course will bring together participants from the National Statistics and Information Authority (NSIA) and Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock (MAIL) – Government of Afghanistan – and the ICIMOD country office in Afghanistan. Basic knowledge in remote sensing and GIS is a prerequisite.
