Increasing forest fires have worsened the air quality across the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region. To help address this problem, we have added a Forest Fire Risk Outlook for Nepal to our forest fire monitoring system. The tool is based on the Canadian Fire Weather Index (FWI) System and uses the High-impact weather assessment Toolkit (HIWAT) data to generate FWI for Nepal. Daily inputs to the system consist of HIWAT noon time forecast for temperature (°C), relative humidity (%), wind speed (km/h), and rainfall (mm) over two days. The system is automatically updated every day. The information can be used to alert areas that face high risk for forest fires.
