GIS and Remote Sensing Specialist
Kabir Uddin is Geographic Information System and Remote Sensing Specialist at ICIMOD; Ecosystem & Carbon Management Thematic Lead for SERVIR-HKH.
A distinguished geographer with over two decades of experience in Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing, Kabir holds both a Bachelor of Science (Hons.) and a Master of Science in Geography and Environmental Studies.
Renowned for his expertise in leading land cover and flood inundation mapping. Kabir’s contributions span diverse research domains, including biodiversity corridor design, habitat suitability assessment, flood hazard zonation, and flood shelter suitability analysis, studying erosion, sedimentation, and river morphological changes, crucial for effective river basin management.
Beyond his research, Kabir is deeply committed to capacity building, conducting training sessions and developing manuals across the Hindu Kush Himalayan region to empower local communities and institutions.
His advocacy for evidence-based decision-making, demonstrated through high-impact journal publications and editorial contributions. His Google Scholar profile boasts over 3,000 citations, attesting to the influence of his research. Recognitions such as being ranked among the Top 5 Scientists at ICIMOD by AD Scientific Index and inclusion in the top 1.11% of global researchers in land cover research by ScholarGPS (2024) underscore his prominence in the field.
As a key advocate for regional collaboration, Kabir has fostered partnerships with national and international agencies, addressing shared environmental challenges across the eight countries of the HKH region. Serving as Bangladesh Country Focal Point, he plays a pivotal role in designing climate adaptation programs and navigating the complexities of multilateral climate financing to support sustainable development in his home country.
