About the consultation
The impacts of climate extremes continue to take a huge economic and social toll on the people of Pakistan. The 2022 Pakistan floods have impacted more than 33 million people in different parts of Pakistan. Over 1,100 people, including over 350 children, have lost their lives, over 735,000 livestock have perished, 2 million acres of crops have been adversely impacted, and critical infrastructure has been severely damaged.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), with support from ICIMOD’s Cryosphere and SERVIR-HKH initiatives, is organising a two-day expert consultation to identify good practices, strategies, and policies that can aid the Government of Pakistan to address the ongoing crisis and build long-term climate resilience. The consultation will bring together climate experts, sectoral subject specialists, local actors, and policymakers.
The people of Pakistan are supporting the government’s efforts and civil society and international humanitarian organisations are stepping forward with generosity and philanthropic spirit to complement the relief and recovery work. PMD and ICIMOD are working together to foster global cooperation on climatic and loss and damage assessments during the crisis and to strengthen climate resilience in Pakistan.
Objectives
The overall objective of the expert consultation is to engage key stakeholders, share the current on-ground climate and environmental issues related to relief and recovery efforts, seek experts’ advice on dealing with ongoing challenges, and foster policy dialogue for long-term resilience.

- Foster collaboration among provincial, federal government departments and international organisations and apply a climate lens in the relief and recovery work
