The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) will conduct a five-day training of trainers on Land Cover Mapping Using Earth Observation Data at its headquarters in Kathmandu, Nepal. The training is part of institutional capacity building activities for partner organizations in Afghanistan under ICIMOD’s SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya (SERVIR-HKH) initiative.
SERVIR-HKH is a joint development initiative of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). SERVIR works in partnership with leading regional organizations worldwide to help developing countries use information provided by Earth observation data and geospatial technologies for managing water, weather and climate risks, agriculture and food security, and land use.
This training will focus on the use of Earth observation data and geospatial technologies for land cover mapping in Afghanistan. Training materials and hands-on exercises have been developed specifically for Afghanistan. The training will cover basic concepts of land use and land cover (LULC) mapping, concepts of remote sensing, image classification, land cover classification systems, and applications of land cover mapping. It will offer hands-on experience in analyzing Earth observation data for land cover mapping. It will also cover topics such as mapping accuracy, land cover change analysis, and satellite image indices. The workshop will engage teaching faculty from Kabul University’s Geoscience, Agriculture, and Environment departments. The experience will provide an opportunity to discuss and refine training materials further and prepare future trainings plans based in Afghanistan.
This training workshop aims to train trainers from Kabul University on the use of Earth observation data and geospatial technology for land cover mapping in Afghanistan. Those who complete the training will themselves be able to deliver similar trainings in Afghanistan with minimal content support from ICIMOD.
