Training on Applications of FEWS NET Remote Sensing Products for Agro-climatological Analysis

About

The primary objective of the workshop is to train staff from Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) Afghanistan and partner institutions in Afghanistan working with the SERVIR Hindu Kush Himalaya (SERVIR-HKH) initiative at ICIMOD in the technical interpretation and analysis of remote sensing and modelked products from the FEWS NET science implementation team—the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the US Geological Survey (USGS). These remote sensing and modelled products are available for download (as data and as graphics) from the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and partner websites. The data is available for use in day-to-day activities, eg, monitoring and early warning, food security analyses, and estimation of snow water volume per basin. The training will also encompass presentations and hands-on practice sessions on web-enabled analysis tools.

Objectives

  • Have an understanding of the basic concepts of remotely sensed data
  • Be knowledgeable of the origin, use, and limitations of FEWS NET remote sensing products
  • Understand the applications of online analysis tools (EWX, Map Viewer, etc)
  • Be exposed to the process of using agro-climatological analysis for developing food security assumptions through multiple stages of analysis
